The 6th Circuit Court of Appeals today ruled that Ohio can defund Planned Parenthood because the organization performs abortions. In response, national prochoice organizing project #VOTEPROCHOICE’s co-founder Heidi Sieck issued the following statement: “Today we are one step closer to becoming a forced birth nation”
Senator Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced the Senate will vote Monday, February 25 on the “Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act,” a hyperbolic and unscientific piece of propaganda from anti-choice extremists. In response, National prochoice organizing project #VOTEPROCHOICE’s co-founder Heidi Sieck issued the following statement: “This is hyperbolic anti-choice propaganda masquerading as legislation”
National pro-choice organizing project #VOTEPROCHOICE’s co-founder and Nebraska native Heidi Sieck issued the following statement: “This is hyperbolic anti-choice propaganda masquerading as legislation” as U.S. Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE) pushes for a vote today on his “Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act” in the Senate.
The conservative antichoice minority is working overtime to demonize and isolate prochoice champions like Virginia House of Delegates Member Kathy Tran, a #VOTEPROCHOICE-endorsed candidate. Let us be crystal clear: America is a staunchly prochoice nation — 72% of Americans support the right to reproductive freedom.
“Oklahoma State Senator Joseph Silk is trying to turn America into a forced birth nation. State Senator Silk just introduced legislation to make abortion a felony homicide punishable by life in prison — this is unconscionable and we cannot let this stand” - statement from #VOTEPROCHOICE co-founder Heidi Sieck
“The confirmation process of Brett Kavanaugh is a fight for the moral compass of our nation and the kind of government we want to have for generations to come. We must learn from the mistakes of 1991, when both Republicans and Democrats shamed, demeaned, and ignored Anita Hill for speaking up about sexual harassment by Clarence Thomas,” said Heidi Sieck, coalition organizer and cofounder of #VOTEPROCHOICE.
“Conservatives on the Senate Judiciary Committee have scheduled confirmation hearings for Brett Kavanaugh on September 4 — 6 before the next Supreme Court session starts on October 1. Their goal is clear: to confirm this Supreme Court Justice so they can control our bodies, to let this President get away with anything, and to change the course of our country for generations to come. We cannot let them win.”
We must fight to protect reproductive freedom as if our lives depend on it—because they do. The end of Roe v. Wade will not mean an end to abortion—only an end to safe abortion. We have seen what happens when abortion is illegal: lives are lost, bodies are mangled, families are destroyed, and most of all, women are controlled. The upcoming midterm elections will be a referendum on reproductive freedom and control. Every elected representatives must stand with the 72% of Americans who support the right to choose, or they can stand on the wrong side of history--and be voted out come November.”
Since Roe v. Wade was decided by the Supreme Court in 1973, reproductive rights have been losing ground on every front. In 2017 alone, 19 states adopted 63 new restrictions on abortion rights and access. States have enacted 401 abortion restrictions since January 2011. The last seven years account for 34% of the 1,193 abortion restrictions enacted by states since the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion in Roe v. Wade. 58% of American women of reproductive age now live in a state considered either hostile or extremely hostile to abortion rights.
“Today’s victory for choice in Ireland makes clear: voters are deeply motivated to cast their ballots for a woman’s right to choose. Here in the U.S, 70 percent of Americans support a woman’s right to choose. Yet many on the Left mistakenly treat abortion like a live wire — vital and necessary in the world we live in, but best not to touch. As we just witnessed in Ireland, when given the opportunity to support choice, voters will cross continents to demand control over their own bodies. “
